First XV Match Reports > CWMBRAN 8 CARDIFF QUINS 10

Home team Cwmbran narrowly lost this league fixture when the result was in the balance right up until the final whistle. Following the minutes silence pre match, the Crows were on the back foot as Cardiff Quins attacked down the slope spilling a number of early chances. Cwmbran fought their way back into the game, with much of the play between both 22's. On the half hour the Quins created an overlap for their right wing to cross for an unconverted try in the corner.
With some great charges upfield, particularly by powerful centre Liam McSweeney, Cwmbran scored a try of their own just prior to the interval when Lock Micky Witts crashed over. Home stand off Neil Williams narrowly missed the conversion, however, with the scores tied and the pack securing enough quality possession down the slope second half a home win looked likely.
Cardiff Quins ran most of their possession second half up the hill, yet most of their charges were halted by the tackling of breakaways Cook, Lang and Birch. Home halfbacks Shaun Watkins and Neil Williams strived to release their runners McSweeney, Roberts, Thomas, Davies and Ellis, however, every attempt came to nothing.Drives by the Cwmbran pack forced Cardiff Quins to give away a penalty which Neil Williams goaled to claim a narrow lead. With twenty minutes remaining the Cwmbran midfield was carved open and quick handlling enabled the visitors to score an unconverted try wide out to the left. A great cover tackle by replacement Chris Wannell stopped a certain try for the Quins as the game came to a close.
Next Saturday Cwmbran are away at New Tredegar and will need to improve to get anything.
